What is Visioning and why is it important for our congregation to engage in it?
What Visioning is NOT: It is not planning, programming or scheduling. It is not a quick fix. It is not always easy.
When I think of vision, I think of the prophets. In Hebrew scripture, the children of Israel found themselves in a fix or had wandered away from God and they had forgotten who and whose they were. They had often lost their identity as being the children of God. God would send a prophet with a vision and the promise of what God was going to do in their midst both for them and through them. While we no longer need prophets because of Jesus Christ’s coming, it is helpful to wonder about what God’s vision and promise might be for us today. What might God want to do for us or how might God want to work through us to minister to others?
What Visioning IS: Visioning addresses how we listen for the prompting of God that is calling us to live out God’s vision of how our church (and that includes each and every one of us) can live out the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
It is looking at our gifts, the needs of our community and the gifts of leadership that we possess in this congregation. It can be a reboot. It can be a shot in the arm. It can be energizing. It can be life giving. Visioning can produce a framework that allows us to be more faithful and fruitful as a church and as individuals.
Visioning requires each and every one of us! It requires an openness to listening to God and to one another. It requires a desire to be a more authentic community of believers. It requires that we be a congregation that lives into God’s preferred future for us. What might that preferred future look like?
Visioning IS something in which we must invest our time and efforts. Visioning helps us to keep the main thing, the main thing. To help us get started, we have the opportunity to meet with Rev. Fred Willis on Saturday, August 3 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. You will love Fred! He has a wonderful gift for asking the just the right questions that will help us catch or recapture God’s vision for us. He is a highly sought after coach by churches that wants to find new ways to be vibrant. Please make plans to join us on August 3, 2019. Your voice and your prayers are needed!
